January News Report

The Ivanpah Solar job is slow gearing up. Local 166 only has 3 Teamsters working for Bechtel at this time. The dirt sub-contractor is still running behind schedule and that is slowing things down as far as hiring for the Teamsters.

The first Labor Management meeting was held on Tuesday January 18, 2011 and Bechtel gave a brief overview of the future schedule. Bechtel is currently working on the assembly of the Heliostat Building. In late January the Unit 1 Power block should be turned over to Bechtel so they can finish the excavation work. Some time in the middle of February Units 2 and 3 should be released for the fencing sub-contractor. Once the fencing is complete Bechtel will be able to start construction on these two units. Water continues to be a problem and this is what is holding up the dirt work. Layne Christensen is drilling 3 wells on this site and the wells should be complete around March 1, 2011 and that will be a big help in jump starting our work on this job.

The Calico Solar plant is off schedule for now. The developer wasn’t able to secure their investors and Southern California Edison pulled out of the power purchase agreement that they had with Tessera. Tessera has since sold the project to another developer and the process has to start all over.

Riverside and San Bernardino counties have several solar fields in different stages of the permit process and we will keep the membership informed of any new developments.

A reminder to all members is to make sure your license, medical card and any and all of your certifications are up to date. If you need to update any certifications you are encouraged to contact the Training School.
